Here we have an exquisite Japanese Nara School sentoku Tsuba Of oval form chased in kebori and katakiribori depicting Shoki, the legendary demon queller who has trapped a mythical Oni (Demon) beneath a straw hat! The intense eye contact is further pronounced by the inlaid gold in each eye. On the reverse it is inscribed Joi, for Issando Joi, one of the 3 great masters of the Nara school of tsuba makers, whom likely inspired this early 19th century piece.
