WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
We must first know that ordinary daylight
is not light direct from the sun. It is light
that has been scattered, or reflected, by
countless tiny particles in the air. The blue
of the sky was therefore thought at one
time to be due to the dust particles in the
air reflecting the short, blue waves while
allowing the longer, red and yellow waves
to pass through. A more recent theory
explains the colour of the sky in quite
another way. The light is still reflected, not
by dust particles but by the crystals of
frozen nitrogen in the upper atmosphere.
The variations of sky colour at different
times and at different distances are due to
the nature and quantity of the atmosphere
through which we are looking.
