Shounai Shoami-style, Chou Karakusa Mon

Description
Yotsu-Mokkou-shaped Tsuba made from iron. Mokkou (木瓜) shape, its origin is a shape of eggs that are rest in a nest. When a quince (it is written 木瓜 in Japanese) is cut into round slices, its cross-section looks similar to this shape; therefore, it was named Mokkougata Tsuba. Yotsu-Mokkougata (a combination of four Mokkou shapes) Tsuba is often seen as this work is categorized.
The Chou (蝶, butterfly) and Karakusa Mon (唐草文, arabesque pattern) are designed and inlaid with brass. Its golden color still remains in good condition and makes a gorgeous appearance for this work. And if you focus on the edge of Tsuba, you will realize that it is covered with silvery metal. This decorative edge type is called Fukurin Mimi (覆輪耳). It has been used to give the Tsuba a gorgeous beauty. It also has practicality, such as preventing the wear of the edge part. Also, it prevents the wear and tear of the Kimono if the edge damages it by touching the cloth.
About the butterfly pattern, a larva becomes a chrysalis, and it grows up to a butterfly. As this insect changes its looks, it symbolizes reborn; therefore, Samurai loved the butterfly pattern. Also, as butterflies make a couple on good terms, this motif represents happy marriage.
People also have a positive impression of the Karakusa design. It is a pattern in which stems and leaves of vines are twined and make curves. Since ivy has a strong vitality and grows up without interruption, people regarded this design as a symbol of prosperity and longevity.
This Tsuba is recognized by The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, which is known as NBTHK. According to its certificate, this Tsuba has Shounai (庄内) Shoami (正阿弥)-style. Shounai is the castle town of the Sakai family and is located in today’s Tsuruoka City in Yamagata prefecture. This is the area where many metalworkers, including Tsuba makers, did well. It is said that Shounai metalworking was a major force in rural areas. We want to say this work, which is judged to have been made in such a region, is highly valuable.

What is Tsuba?
Tsuba is the hand-guard of the Japanese sword. High-class Samurai wore his katana sword with its beautiful sword mountings such as Tsuba. Tsuba’s front design tends to be more decorative as this part was often seen by other Samurais when he was walking on the streets.
