FUCHI KASHIRA,
made in
SENTOKU,
a matching set for a japanese
KATANA
or
WAKIZASHI
size.
This design depicts
YAMAMOTO KANSUKE
fighting
INOSHISHI
a giant japanese boar.
It is expressed with great strength and beauty.
Technique
The ground is deeply incised and decorated in
IROE TAKAZOGAN
a high relief inlay, with accurate details accented with incrustations of gold.
The design is an excellent chisel work, carefully inlaid and finely decorated with accurate details.

YAMAMOTO KANSUKE
was a Japanese
SAMURAI
of the
SENGOKU
period of the 16th century.He took the name of
KANSUKE
when he became a Buddhist monk.
He was known as one of the Twenty-Four Generals of
TAKEDA SHINGEN.
Legend says that
KANSUKE
was blind in one eye and lame, but a fierce warrior and military strategist nevertheless.
In various works of art, he is depicted holding a
NAGINATA
as a support for his weak leg, but also fighting a giant boar, as in the famous woodblock print by
UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI
.
At the fourth Battle of
KAWANAKAJIMA
, he charged into the enemy ranks and being killed in action with his two chief retainers.
