    Description

Finely carved pair of iron and silver Dragon and Shi Shi tsuba by later generation Yasuchika, Mid-Edo period, one signed in silver hakko-gakki, second with the hakko-gakki lost (price reduced accordingly). Finely forged iron, outstanding silver inlay technique rivaling that of the finest Kinko masters. There’s just enough wear to indicate that these pieces were each mounted on a single sword. It is unlikely that they were mounted on more than one blade, as there is no evidence of sekigane or fitting to multiple blades. These were clearly high level, special order pieces, reinforced by the fact that gold and silver were priced equally during the Edo period. The rectangular tsuba was must likely intended for a tachi blade given the placement of the kozuka and kogai ana.
    Measurements are approximately 76mm x 83mm x 3mm on the square tsuba and approximately 81mm x 85mm x 4mm on the oval tsuba.
