Description
MARU GATA
is a rounded
TSUBA
shape, made of iron with a squared rim, set up for the size of a
KATANA
or
WAKIZASHI
size, provided with
KOGAI ANA
plugged in gold foil.
Chiseled on either side of the central opening, at the top and bottom of the pattern, to connect the
SEPPA DAI
and the rim, this design depictes two
AOI
, or japanese hollyhock, that shows both the back and the face of the leaves and flowers, in a circular arrangement and curling to included both
HITSU ANA.
Altering the sizes and placement of the elements virtually sprinkled throughout the plate creates a mood of dancing and flying motion.
Technique
The surface is polished matt chocolate brown color of very good tone, pierced in delicate manner and finely carved within the half-pipe rim in
YO SUKASHI,
positive silhouette. The detailed carving repeats on the reverse with
KEBORI
light hairline incised surface details, which would indicate his style as well, and the plate is smoothly polished.
It is expressed with great strength and beauty in a relief carving done in the typical style of a master of
KINAI
school.

The
AOI
or hollyhock was known as the
KAMO AOI
as it is sacred to the
KAMO
shrine in
KYOTO
dedicated to
TAMAYORI HIME
mother of
JIMMU TENNO
the first mythic emperor in Japan.
The
AOI
of the
TOKUGAWA
shogunate originated from their association with that shrine, it was reserved for exclusive use by the
TOKUGAWA
shogunal line.
The
KINAI
family, which may have been a branch of the
MYOCHIN
, was founded by
ISHIKAWA KINAI,
17th century, but the succeeding masters bore the name of
TAKAHASHI
.
All sign "
KINAI
" with certain differences in the characters used and in the manner of writing them.
KINAI I,
was a native of the province of
OMI
, but moved to
FUKUI
in
ECHIZEN
, where the succeeding masters continued to work down to the end of the
TOKUGAWA
period.
