    [Describe]
The term "Nanban" refers to foreign countries, including Portugal, Spain, and, in a broader sense, China, and came into wide use after the Portuguese introduced guns to Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1543.
Initially, "nanban tsuba" referred to the tsubas attached to European sabers used by foreigners, but after the Tokugawa Shogunate closed the country off to the outside world in 1635, the Chinese, anticipating demand in Japan, devised a way to use them on Japanese swords and exported them actively under the name "nanban tsubas" (nanban bridges). These were called "Nanban Tsubasa" and were exported in great numbers. In Japan, Nanban Tsubas were produced by imitating and improving on these imported products.
