The work on the
FUCHI

KASHIRA
is very elaborated and depictes
WATANABE NO TSUNA
probably, with these assistants, trying to hold back his horse.
WATANABE NO TSUNA
is a popular semi-legendary hero of numerous mediaeval romances, vassal of
MINAMOTO YORIMITSU
whom he managed to kill the enourmous spider demon.

ground, or “ Fish roe “ a pattern of small raised dots made with a hollow punch is deeply incised and decorated in

The horse of
WATANABE NO TSUMA
is often represented without his master. It is always a fully caparisoned horse and this craft is an allusion to the following tale.
One night
WATANABE
, on horseback, went to the
RASHO
gate to slay a demon, terrorizing that neighbourhood, but in the dark he was plucked from his horse by an enormous hand that had takem him by the helmet.
The hero at once lashed out with sword and cut off an enormous monster's arm.
